Accused drug conspirator needs intensive criminal defense

The distribution of methamphetamine continues to be a problem in Virginia, despite being overshadowed by the opioid crisis here and throughout the country. The federal and state authorities recently carried out a sweep of alleged methamphetamine co-conspirators in Surry County and southern Virginia. They netted 20 arrests of persons allegedly involved in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. Criminal defense counsel for each defendant will assiduously investigate the details and surrounding facts to determine any inaccuracies or fallacies in the indictment of each accused person.

The sweep was a part of Operation Rolling Thunder, a joint federal and state project. The operation has conducted a multi-year investigation into alleged methamphetamine operations by an organized drug distribution organization. The Surry County Sheriff's Office alleges that the people arrested were involved in distributing a "large quantity of methamphetamine" into the county and the area of Southwest Virginia.

One of the alleged main conspirators was a male who was arrested earlier in the year. In that operation, officials executed a search warrant at the man's residence and allegedly found two stolen cars, two firearms and 32 grams of methamphetamine. The male resident was not at home at that time, and eventually he is alleged to have led deputies on a car chase that allegedly resulted in finding 31 grams of methamphetamine in the car. Later, in a raid at the same individual's home, the police allege that he was ultimately found and booked on possession of 92 grams of methamphetamine on his person.

Criminal defense counsel in Virginia must scrutinize the massive arrest of 20 persons in a wide federal sweep. Sometimes, law enforcement authorities conducting a widespread drug sweep make mistakes in identifying individuals and end up arresting one or more innocent persons. In  addition, even though the authorities assert that they've discovered a large conspiracy to distribute meth, the sentencing of such individuals under federal law, if they are convicted, is significantly impacted by the degree of the person's participation in the conspiracy.
